Advice Sentence

Please note: the present advice replaces the advice given in November 2024 for catches in 2025. ICES advises that when the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) approach is applied, catches of herring in the Irish Sea in 2025 should be no more than 3206 tonnes*. The fishery for Irish Sea herring (her.27.nirs) includes fish from the Celtic Sea herring stock (her.27.irls), which is below Blim. To be consistent with ICES advice catches of Celtic Sea herring should be zero tonnes

Footnotes
*
For autumn-spawning stocks, the spawning-stock biomass (SSB) is determined at spawning time and is influenced by fisheries between 01January and spawning (set for September).
**
SSB 2025 relative to SSB 2024 (10 383t).
***
The probability of SSB being below Blim in 2025. This probability relates to the short-term probability of SSB _lt_; Blim and is not comparable to the long-term probability of SSB _lt_; Blim tested in simulations when estimating fishing mortality reference points.
^
Assuming same catch scenario in 2026 as in 2025.
^^
Advice value for 2025 relative to the advice value for 2024 (4 821 tonnes).
